Minister States Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

During a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

This broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
