Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
